Vice President Candidate:

Bethany Lacey-Freeman

Proposer: Abigail Barker

Seconder: Anna Constable

What is the main change you want to see in welfare, activities and inclusion at NUA Students' Union?

As the inaugural Vice President, one of my core responsibilities will be to ensure clear and friendly communication between myself, societies and students. I will always respect confidentiality and represent a student’s beliefs and feelings on their behalf. The current SU does a fine job at this, but I would love to take the reins and liaise with the student body in an approachable manner. As the inaugural Vice President, one of my core responsibilities will be to ensure clear and friendly communication between myself, societies and students. I will always respect confidentiality and represent a student’s beliefs and feelings on their behalf.

What skills and experience do you bring to the role that make you the best candidate?

My skills and experience that will assist me in achieving my objectives include:

  • PAL and PAL Leader roles; which involved organising activities in a team

  • Women’s Liberation Officer with strong beliefs and values motivating an upcoming brief for a collaborative zine

  • As someone who was educated overseas I believe I have a good understanding of issues facing international students

  • Ability to work and manage multiple projects

  • Active listener and problem-solver

What are your objectives for your year in office?

  • Forming a clear liaison channel with affiliated clubs and societies (via Teams) in order to improve communication and cooperation so that jointly we can promote interests. Furthermore, organise meetings with them to investigate how as a group we can work together and consider what role can I and the SU play to help achieve their goals

  • Promote the use of Microsoft Teams for students to communicate with me as I believe that more can be achieved using this media as it is a more approachable and informal way of communicating

  • Negotiate with NUA to obtain software such as Zbrush for the Game and/or Animation courses, which would be free for students to use whilst enrolled in their specific course (and possibly thereafter offered at a discount price). If successful, funding to be sort from the University or Commercial Sponsors (companies / Chamber of Commerce, Government, etc)

What policies would you deliver if you were elected as Students' Union Vice President?

  • Prepare online briefings for students relating to COVID-19 recovery and its financial implications and affect on social and educational activities. Furthermore, preparing for a smooth transition out of the COVID situation so that we can again enrich uni life.

  • I will focus my energies on resolving and developing welfare, diversity and inclusivity issues with the student body

  • Freshers (2020) may have missed out on several activities due to the restrictions, therefore, I propose that we organise a ‘Refreshers’ whereby we re-run some events as well as include new ones - when restrictions let up. This may include discounts for the future Year 2 and Year 1 students since they may feel that they had missed out on a ‘true’ social Freshers

  • Introduce a VP Section in the SU Blog that will cover activities and reviews

  • Support the President in lobbying local and central government

Why should students vote for you as the 2021/22 Students' Union Vice President?

  • I’ll encourage students to feel comfortable in bringing questions / issues / feedback to me and knowing they will get a prompt response

  • As a PAL Leader contributed towards the “Stitch & Bitch” activity to hopefully improve the mental health of students

  • Regular liaison with the International Student Society to ensure that the SU is available to offer support where it can, especially past COVID

  • Hold to account University authorities by representing the concerns of students
